Arriving at OR Tambo International Airport Johannesburg, South Africa

Upon arriving at the OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, go through immigration, follow the signs to claim baggage and clear customs. More information about OR Tambo Airport can be found at http://johannesburg-airport.co.za/

We would recommend that you either take the Gautrain or a taxi from the airport to your place of accommodation. Your hotel may also offer transport from the hotel – contact your hotel directly regarding transport to and from the airport.

  Please note that a Gautrain Gold Card costs R15[1] to purchase, this is a non-refundable cost of the card.  The cost from OR Tambo Airport to Pretoria is R 150.00.To reach your hotel from the Gautrain Station you will need to take a taxi. The costs is approximately R30 to R50.

Currency

The currency in Pretoria is the South African Rand (ZAR). The exchange rate is approximately USD1 = ZAR (South African Rand) R 13.81

Credit Cards

International credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and bank cards) can be used in most cash machines (ATMs) and for payments at hotels and shops.  Some do accept American Express.  Cash machines, restaurants, taxi, car rental agencies and most shops accept all major credit cards.  Cash payments are the most popular payment method, however credit and debit cards such as MasterCard or Visa are commonly accepted in hotels, shops and restaurants.

The working language of the Conference will be English.

The Congress materials and badges will be distributed to participants at the Conference Registration Desk during registration. Name badges are required for admission to all academic, social or cultural events.

3. Union Buildings

The Union Buildings form the official seat of the South African government and also house the offices of the president of South Africa.  In November 1910 the cornerstone of the Union Building was laid.

4. Voortrekker Monument

The Voortrekker Monument is located just south of Pretoria in South Africa. This massive granite structure is prominently located on a hilltop, and was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854.

6. Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves

Sterkfontein is a set of limestone caves of special interest to paleo-anthropologists located in Gauteng province, about 40 km northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa in the Muldersdrift area close to the town of Krugersdorp.

7. Aerial Cableway, Hartbeespoort

The Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway, originally constructed in 1973, extends to the top of the Magaliesberg and offers panoramic views of the Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam and the surrounding area.

8. Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum is a museum complex in Johannesburg, South Africa illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa. The complex, owned by Gold Reef City Casino, was opened in November 2001.

9. Mandela House
