The International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC) is constituted by Information Commissioners and Ombudsmen from across the globe who meet regularly to discuss topical issues related to the protection and promotion of the right to public information for the benefit of citizens.
The 2019 ICIC will be held in the year in which the High-Level Political Forum of the United Nations will be reviewing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16. As we all know, SDG 16.10.2. calls on States to adopt and implement access to information laws and policies. We must use the conference to reflect on the role of Information Commissioners and Ombudsmen, collectively as a network and individually as national oversight bodies, in monitoring the implementation of SDG 16.10.2. The conference will also build on past experiences and will provide a stellar forum for identifying emerging trends and addressing recurring challenges in access to public information.
On the last day of the conference Information Commissioners and Ombudsmen will meet in a closed meeting to adopt the proposed Governance Charter of the ICIC, which the Governance Working Group (GWG) has been working on for the past few months. The adoption of a Governance Charter is historic and is an important milestone in the permanent establishment of the ICIC.
The 2019 ICIC Conference is hosted by the Information Regulator (South Africa) in partnership with the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa.
