Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering

Metallurgical engineers change the world around them – by extracting metals from ores, by producing and shaping alloys, and by contributing to economic development. This Department similarly helps to shape and refine the people we work with. We have much to offer in terms of degree programmes, research opportunities and continuing education. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching, research and industrial contacts and laboratory facilities.

Metals and minerals are of particular importance in South Africa, and our graduates are provided with skills which contribute to the further development of these resources.

In line with the aims of the University of Pretoria, we aim to develop world-class engineers who are also world-class people – our range of activities includes much more than just academic training. The Department co-hosts (with Mining Engineering) the Pretoria branch of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, which offers monthly seminars, while the Metallurgical Students' Association organizes a range of social and team-building activities.
