The Department of New Testament Studies and Related Literature is internationally recognized for its contribution to research on several topics of the New Testament, for its training of ministerial candidates, and teaching on the New Testament for those students who are interested in religious studies. The Department is one of the leading and largest departments in New Testament Studies at residential universities in South Africa and attracts not only a considerable number of postgraduate students from across the globe, but also some of the most prominent international specialists as honorary professors and as research associates. The Department has a long standing history of qualitative contributions in the areas of New Testament exegesis and hermeneutics with close involvement, participation and leadership in New Testament societies nationally and globally.

Our specialist foci are in the areas of historical Jesus and parable research, New Testament ethics, gender studies, sexuality in the New Testament and related literature, Hellenistic Judaism (especially the Septuagint and Philo of Alexandria), apocalyptic literature, ritual, Jesus as healer, and healing in an African environment. We believe in a holistic approach in exegetical and hermeneutical studies of the New Testament, and utilize synchronic, diachronic, reader-response and social-scientific approaches our study of the New Testament corpus.

Apart from their own research, the members of the Department are dedicated to the supervision of postgraduate students. We are proud of the fact that our Master’s- and doctoral students are from all the continents, and promote contextual research where applicable. As can be seen from previous doctorates of the Department, the members of the Department can supervise students on any topic related to the New Testament.

We set high standards for ourselves and we rigorously believe that there is no alternative for quality in research and in teaching. Our full-time lecturers, research associates, and extraordinary professors are of international standing and regularly participate on invitation at international conferences. Most of the members of the Department are all involved in editorial committees of scholarly journals and book series, as well as in the assessment of submissions for publications, and regularly act as external examiners.
