The 53-8 win will be recorded as one of the most important milestones in the University of Pretoria's Varsity Cup history – and that with a home crowd of 7000 as most willing witnesses.
It was not only the first time in eight Varsity Cup seasons and 63 matches that a half-century was stacked against Maties, but also their biggest defeat ever. The seven tries UP-Tuks scored are the most that Maties have ever conceded in a single match.
After the match, experts were united in calling this without doubt one of UP-Tuks’ most clinically executed Varsity Cup performances ever. Comments varied from 'awesome', 'ruthless' and 'poetry in motion’ to ‘intriguingly impressive' and ‘the end product of a well-coached team that has clearly set its sights on the championship title’.
Pote Human, UP-Tuks coach, believes his team deserves all the praise bestowed on it and said: ‘I will be last to deprive them of their moment of glory. It was after all a brilliant performance. However, such is the making of our team that the players will be first to shift the focus back to the immediate business at hand. The magnitude of the record win against Maties will make us more determined to raise the bar even higher in our next game, against Pukke in Potchefstroom on Monday (2 March).’
