Recently, the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies held its annual award ceremony to reward outstanding performances by the students in the department at both undergraduate and honours levels.
Each year, the department chooses a specific inspirational theme and this year’s was centred on "Advice to my younger (student) self". In total, 16 students walked away with awards from different categories.
Winnie Senoamadi, who recently graduated for her BSocSci Heritage and Cultural Tourism, UP, says she is excited to have received an award for her performance over all three years at undergraduate level in Heritage and Cultural Tourism. “I did expect to pass with distinctions, but I did not anticipate an award. This shows that hard work and dedication do pay off,” she said.
“I am very pleased that I am part of this ceremony, I truly appreciate what the department has done in terms of acknowledging our hard work through the years. I am also happy to have received an award for outstanding performance in Heritage and Cultural Tourism at second-year level,” said Rudolph Boraine, recent graduate, BSocSci Heritage and Cultural Tourism, UP.
The event was attended by various sponsors of award categories and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Vasu Reddy and Deputy Dean, Prof Maxi Schoeman.
“It takes a lot to put together an event like this, and we are grateful to our sponsors. Academia is not a joke, hence we celebrate these students who have risen to the occasion and it is also wonderful to see how they have grown and gratifying to see them flourish like this. The department would like to wish them well,” said Prof Karen Harris, Head of Department: Historical and Heritage Studies.
