Message from the HOD

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The department is a large academic department with service-learning sites in Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Kalafong Academic Hospital, Tembisa Hospital, Witbank Hospital, 1 Military Hospital and Mamelodi Hospital. Connections also exist between the department and Laudium- and Pretoria West Hospitals as well as Tshwane District Hospital.

The hub of the department is however on the 7th floor of the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. In addition to lecture space and offices, the Reproductive Biology Laboratory is situated here. The hubs of the subspecialist units in Gynaecologic Oncology. Fetal and Maternal Medicine, Reproductive Biology and also Urogynaecology are situated in this space. Further departmental offices and subspecialist activities are found in Klinkala building as well as Kalafong Hospital


The academic department has several functions:

1 Teaching and training: per year almost 1000 medical students are trained by and rotate through the department. There are 31 registrars in training and also some MSc and BSc(hons) students. Several PhD students are busy with this study

2 Service delivery: The service learning platform has been described above. Specialist and subspecialist services are offered.

3 Research: The department houses a MRC research unit. There are several research themes actively being researched in the department.

4 Impact on the community: Apart from providing medical care in our discipline, community involvement in the form of outreach, symposia, lectures, membership of professional committees and boards is active in the department.
