This facet of research recognises the centrality of the politics of governance in relation to how Africa’s natural resources are managed. It argues that to govern Africa’s natural resources innovatively for sustainability, two areas of focus are critical: governance of the commons and trans-boundary governance of resources. A good example is that of water politics on the continent where rivers and lakes are shared between states often leading to all forms of contestation, while at the same time deleting the local people’s agency in the management of these scarce resources.
