In the spirit of exchange experiences and enhance international cooperation, the Law Clinic of the University of Pretoria is hosting Mr Ulrich Stege as Extraordinary Lecturer, in 2017/2018.
Mr Ulrich Stege http://www.iuctorino.it/people/ulrich-stege/ is an experienced European lawyer and internationally well connected clinician from Turin (Italy). While he is directing the Clinical Program of the International University College of Turin (IUC, http://www.iuctorino.it/), which he founded 8 years ago, he is also acting as Executive Secretary of the European Network for Clinical Legal Education (ENCLE, http://www.encle.eu/) and Steering Committee Member of the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE, https://www.gaje.org/).
At his stay at the University of Pretoria, Mr Stege contributed to the preparation of the clinical students by bringing in his experience. In addition, he participated in workshops, seminars and conferences on issues related to legal education, human rights and asylum/migration (e.g. at the UP Centre of Human Right, the African Centre for Migration and Society or at the Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa Conference in Cape Town etc.) and visited other law clinics in South Africa.
Mr Stege considered the UP Law Clinic as an important experience in order to help develop the European Clinical Legal Education movement further. He stated: “The experience of this innovative and well structured Law Clinic of the University of Pretoria demonstrates in many different ways the power, the usefulness and the success of this particular form of legal education. It proves to be an adequate tool to empower young professionals with competences and values, who are then able to confront the more and more globalised world and at the same time, to provide qualified and socially relevant support for communities in need. There is much that we can learn in Europe from the Law Clinics in South Africa.”
