Inherent to the discipline of Genetics, is the concept of diversity. The Division exemplifies this not only in terms of the breadth of our research focus and degree programmes, but also in celebrating the strength of our diverse personal backgrounds, expertise, views and, of course, our colourful personalities.

We are passionate about research and strive for excellence, international impact and local relevance. Several independent groups collectively ensure critical mass and significant contributions in research fields such as animal, plant, human and environmental health, species interactions (from a cellular and molecular level to whole organism interactions), genomics and metagenomics, population genetics and biotechnology.

Of equal importance is our focus on excellence in teaching and learning, including mentorship of more than 100 postgraduate students annually and more than 3000 module enrolments in a range of undergraduate programmes. We also actively participate in community engagement, in terms of professional services and contributing to the public understanding of science.

Genetics is a fundamental discipline in the Life Sciences. Genomics and post-genomics advances give us unprecedented opportunities to address fundamental questions, to satisfy our curiosity about how living systems function, and to make significant contributions to tackling the grand challenges of South Africa, the region and the globe.
