About Public Health Medicine

Introduction

The programme has been designed to prepare graduates to be leaders in the field of public health and provide them with the skills and knowledge to identify and address local, national, regional and international public health issues.

The programme reflects the values of Public Health Medicine: social justice, equity, human rights and responsiveness to the needs of the people in South Africa and in Africa.

Public Health Medicine is multi-disciplinary with staff from a number of disciplines involved in the teaching and research components.

Career opportunities

Public Health graduates mey work in:

  • senior mangerial positions in national, provincial or local government;
  • public hospitals, clinics or community health centres;
  • non-governmental organisations working in public health;
  • universities;
  • research institutions;
  • international agencies such as WHO, CDC or othe United Nations agencies.
