Admission requirements

  1. MEd degree, either academic or professional or any other cognate academic or professional master's degree
  2. Achieved an average of at least 60% in the master’s degree

Other programme-specific information

  • Students enrolled for a DEd degree must complete their studies within two years after first registering for the degree;
  • Renewal of registration after the two-year period is permitted only under special circumstances in which case the head of department may give approval for a limited fixed extension of this period in terms of the set procedures;
  • Students will be granted two opportunities to pass the Research Plan for Education Leadership module. Unsuccessful candidates will not be allowed to continue with the programme.

The research component consists of two sequential assessed stages, the first reflects research planning, the second reflects the actual execution and reporting of the research.

  • Module content:

    Students will be exposed to the concept of megatrends and a selection the latest global megatrends such as global warming, the social media explosion and the impact of these trends on organisations, education, communication and leadership, as well as the contemporary challenges surrounding these trends on education locally and internationally. The content will be scaffolded to support independent learning.

    This module will guide and encourage students to take a systemic organisational perspective to leadership and to provide leadership for positive change and transformation in a complex educational environment. The content will be scaffolded to support independent learning.

  • Module content:

    The module addresses the specific research needs of students of a doctorate level professional degree, where the focus will be on different research paradigms/frameworks and their application to/of research and research skills within and to the education leaders’ professional requirements and contexts. Students will, during the course of the module, plan and design an original research project or set of projects and develop, propose and defend a proposal for the research project or projects to be completed as part of module NMQ 901 Research Project and Report. Successful completion of the research plan and the proposal is an assessment point in the research component.

    Students will collaboratively identify and describe challenges and
    opportunities within their own unique educational environments and
    contexts, and will be guided to develop the skills required to deal with
    adversity in their own and in the greater educational environment. The
    content will be scaffolded to support independent learning.

    Students will be required to study the linked phenomena of transformation 
    and change and then focus on transformation and change in the educational
    environment, with the aim of developing the skills to bring about and manage
    transformation and change in their unique educational leadership
    environments and contexts. The content will be scaffolded to support
    independent learning.

The coursework and seminar based component represents guided and scaffolded independent reading and learning within four assessed themes all of which are taken by students.

The higher education sector has undergone an extensive alignment to the Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework (HEQSF) across all institutions in South Africa. In order to comply with the HEQSF, all institutions are legally required to participate in a national initiative led by regulatory bodies such as the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
