Internal Culture

Nerina’s vision for internal culture involves creating opportunities for the ladies to get to know one another, allowing us to have solid, internal relationships and understanding one another. By having knowledge about the ladies of Nerina - their culture, interests and frame of reference - it will be easier to create a form of sisterhood. Our vision also includes creating more opportunities to experience and gain knowledge about the different cultures within our residence, allowing us to celebrate diversity, achieve social cohesion and inclusion.

Our primary objective is to create a platform of opportunities in which balance, on both an academic and social level, can be achieved. Our internal Culture House committee member aims to:

  • Create a support structure for the ladies.
  • Create a rich “Res Life” experience.
  • Create a platform which the ladies can showcase their talents and celebrate their culture, allowing ladies from various cultures to gain knowledge about one another.
  • Create a sense of belonging, purpose and identity as a lady of Nerina.

All events ideas are decided upon based on suggestions from the house. This allows the ladies to be a part of the decision-making and it ensures that the events are inclusive.

Over the years, Nerina has had a variety of interesting socials such as the St. Paddy’s social which was hosted in March 2013. Everyone who attended the social embraced the theme and the highlights of the evening were watching the rugby on a large screen as well as eating Burger King. We also hosted a successful cocktail evening with another female residence, Katjiepiering (2016).

As a residence, we have an annual internal event called “Bak- ‘n-Klooster” which is our residence tradition. This is always tremendous fun – eggs crack on the floor; flour does not end up in the bowls and everyone ends up in fits of laughter as the ladies compete in the baking competition which always has a twist.

Each residence has dinees which the ladies absolutely adore wholeheartedly. These events give the ladies of the house an opportunity to ‘look on fleek’ by dressing up. The food at the dinees is always a highlight and everyone gets a chance to break it down on the dancefloor too. Talk about a real jol!
