As Nerina residents, we are aware that individuals need to look after their well-being in order to be able to contribute to other aspects of their lives and the lives of others positively. We realise that well-being is much greater than eating healthy and staying fit. Well-being also encompasses happiness, security, prosperity and a good self-esteem. We try to nurture, build and motivate each other to get to a point where a balance of these aspects is obtained and maintained resulting in a house filled with diverse, open-minded and unique individuals who are well-rounded.
By incorporating our values (unity, respect, integrity, balance and excellence) in everything we do as a house, we are maintaining the well-being of our house.
It is essential to remember that well-being goes hand-in-hand with wellness which deals with the mind, body and spirit. As House Nerina, we incorporate activities which focus on these three dimensions.
Our mind is a powerful tool which needs to be nurtured and stimulated. We have recently started hosting events specifically aimed to relax our minds and to take a break from the constant studying. In October 2016, we hosted an internal braai day where the ladies went to the LC Sports Grounds (with the guardian of the house parents) to enjoy a sunny day filled with laughs, games and food! We also had a movie night (with popcorn and cooldrinks of course) and a games night where we were able to challenge each other intellectually and share a laugh or two.
As much as it is important to look after our bodies, we believe that it is just as important to care about the next person too. Nerina takes part in the SANBS blood drives by inviting them to come to our hall and have our ladies donate blood voluntarily. We have also had external parties come to our residence to communicate to us the importance of our bodies; breast cancer and other health related topics.
We are conscious and welcoming of the fact that individuals within the residence have different religious backgrounds. We try to ensure that no one is isolated and excluded due to what they believe in. As a residence, we highly encourage ladies to respect each other and we try to accommodate everyone regarding their official religious days and their spiritual activities. We have had several cell groups taking place from different Christian denominations. We accept invites from any religious organisations and we encourage our ladies to go to these various events if they feel it will benefit them and have a positive impact on their lives. We also encourage the ladies to go to their religious places of choice.
In an event that ladies feel disheartened or lost (academically, spiritually or holistically), they are encouraged to talk to the well-being house committee member or any of the house committee members.
