External Culture

Our University journey would not be complete without a bit of healthy competition. External Culture enables students to participate in activities which are absolutely fun and a great way to take a break and form new bonds. Three main activities form part of external culture and these include InSync, Serrie and Serenade.

Ienkmelodienk (the new name is InSync) is a First Year activity which the Spriete will remember FOREVER! They will only have ten (10) hours of rehearsals where all of their talent will be showcased to show Nerina off! First Years get to bond with their fellow Spriete and after InSync, the first years will look back and wish they had the chance to do it all over again.

A new theme is chosen every year by each residence and songs are chosen which best suit the theme.  The Spriete get an opportunity to sing and dance as a unit to make their performance a show for the audience. All the residences are then scored according to a certain criteria and the best house wins- which we certainly hope will be the Nerina Spriete in 2017.

Serrie is basically InSync on STERIODS! Costumes are organised; there are more props and lights too. A new theme is chosen for Serrie by each House each year and hours of practise goes into this performance. What makes this fun and worth all the hours of sweat, hard work and more hard work is the fact that we do not perform once. We perform more than once and get marked by various male residences. The residences which accumulate the most points make it to the finals where they get to perform AGAIN (which is a huge honour!). The lady’s residences perform first on one night then the male residences perform on the next night. Serrie involves the whole house. Whether you know how to dance or not, it really does not matter because all the hours of practise turn everyone into a professional dancer. Having the whole House participate makes it an incredible experience - an experience which involves learning about other languages and cultures; creating bonds with people you would never have spoken to in the corridors and memories which last a lifetime. Nerina ladies get to choreograph their own dance moves and formations. These dance moves are incorporated into the bigger picture which involves dancing and sing along to our very own live Nerina Band. Serrie is a highlight on the residence calendar so getting involved would only benefit your residence experience.

Serenade, get ready for a thrilling, creative, hard-working singing journey, leading up to a performance at UP’s Serenade Competition 2017! From musical arrangements to choreography and costumes -Serenade 2017 promises to make the singer and performer within you, come alive!

Serenade provides a platform for individuals to showcase and to celebrate their talent and culture. This is done by entertaining the audience through an energetic, interactive and creative performance. The performance is aimed at inspiring individuals to actively participate, create, support and enjoy the art of singing, music and performance.

The stage allows for issues to be addressed, themes to be explored, collaborative initiative and creativity, choreography, humour and risks to be taken resulting into a performance which promises the experience of a lifetime!

The process envisioned for Nerina serenade 2017 involves a fun, collaborative journey filled with "GEES". Serenade is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. 7 Months of hard work and long hours of rehearsals should reflect fun, enthusiasm and priceless memories regardless of performance week!
