Equine Clinic

The Equine Clinic is custom-designed and boasts 45 well-ventilated, light and roomy indoor stables plus spacious work areas. Biosecurity is paramount and rigorous hygiene control is practiced by utilising a strict multi-step cleaning programme and providing disinfectant footpads at strategic points throughout the clinic. Isolation stables are utilised prevent the spread of contagious bacterial or viral diseases and all horses are submitted to a nasal swab for MRSA and a faecal swab for Salmonella upon their arrival. Disposable gloves and separate thermometers are used for each equine patient, and full barrier nursing applies to all ICU patients as well as mares with foals.

Procedures such as endoscopy, ECG, laser, ultrasonography, digital radiography and nuclear imaging are regularly performed to aid in patient diagnosis, and colic patients are medically and surgically catered for. A high-speed treadmill, situated on campus at the Equine Research Unit, is available if required, to assist in the assessment of lameness.
