Short Biography:
Willie Burger became professor of literature and Head of the Afrikaans Department at the University of Pretoria in 2010. Earlier he was also professor and head of department at the University of Johannesburg and the University of Zululand. As literary critic he writes reviews for subject journals as well as papers and magazines. As columnist he contributed to various popular publications (Beeld and Vrouekeur) and in his weekly columns and as editor of Vrouekeur Book Page he attempts to disseminate academic research to a wider general audience. In 2015 his reviews in Vrouekeur were awarded the Caxton Magazines Excellence Reward.
Research Areas:
Willie’s research is focused on narrative and on aesthetic effect. He is one of the leaders of the Southern Modernity Research Project at UP.
He has published more than 40 articles and book chapters and edited the following books on some of the most important Afrikaans authors:

Short Biography:
Nerina Bosman teaches Afrikaans Linguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level and Applied Language Studies at postgraduate level. Her primary research focus is lexical semantics (especially corpus-based metaphor studies). She is chairperson of the Southern African Society for Netherlandic Studies and serves on the board of the International Society for Netherlandic Studies.

Her current research is about forms of address in Afrikaans.

Short Biography:
I am currently completing a PhD dissertation in which I use Bertrand Westphal’s geocriticism to compare the representation of Cape Town and Johannesburg in Afrikaans and English novels.
Research Areas:
South African comparative literature, literary theory, gender studies and ecocriticism.
Current Research:
Contemporary Afrikaans and English South African prose and poetry, ecocritical theory, feminism and New Materialism.

Short Biography:
Joanine Nel teaches Afrikaans Linguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level and Applied Language Studies at postgraduate level. Her primary research focus is on academic literacy as well as language acquisition and learning (especially focussing on the syntactic, morphological and semantic analysis between the ages of five and nine).
Research Areas:
Pragmatics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition and learning as well as academic literacy.
Current Research:
Her current research is about language acquisition and learning in the foundation phase of the education system in low socio-economic areas.

Short Biography:
I am a nerd who really likes Afrikaans words – especially when they are spelled correctly (although a few Afrikaans words make me shudder). I like analysing Afrikaans sentences and correcting my friends, family and students when they make grammatical errors. But only in my head, because people don’t really like it when you correct them. I often think about the origin and the nature of language and I love to chat about it as well – to the dismay of the people I mentioned earlier. The process of teaching computers to understand and produce natural language fascinates me. I love teaching and my students and I try to make sure that they also harbour positive feelings towards me.

Short Biography:
Jacomien van Niekerk teaches Afrikaans literature at the University of Pretoria, specifically poetry and plays. She completed a doctoral thesis on the writer Antjie Krog in 2014 and has the following book forthcoming in 2016: ‘baie worde’: Identiteit en transformasie by Antjie Krog (Van Schaik). She is the treasurer of the International Society for the Oral Literatures of Africa (ISOLA) and is an editor of the literary journal Tydskrif vir Letterkunde.

Short Biography:
Besides lecturing at the University of the Western Cape and Pretoria Hein Willemse was a visiting professor at several universities in Southern Africa, North and Central America, inter alia as visiting scholar to the Colégio de México, México DF, México, and Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Grinnell College in Iowa, USA. He taught courses on African Thought and Literature, Comparative Literature, Afrikaans Literature, critical literary theory and Oral Literature Studies. His research concentrates on the theorization of black marginality in Afrikaans literature and oral traditions. He has contributed numerous academic articles in his chosen field and wrote, edited or co-edited 13 book-length publications. The South African police seized and censured his co-edited book Die Trojaanse perd (The Trojan Horse) in 1986; More than Brothers, a book on the lives of the artists Peter Clarke and James Matthews received an award from the Western Cape Department of Arts and Culture for the protection of local heritage in 2001. His book on black Afrikaans writing and literature entitled Aan die ander kant: Swart Afrikaanse Skrywers en die Afrikaanse Letterkunde (On the Other Side: Black Afrikaans Writers and Afrikaans Literature) was published in 2007. He most recently co-edited Achmat Davids’ The Afrikaans of the Cape Muslims (Protea Books, 2011) and ‘n Vlag aan die tong (2015). In 2003 he became the editor-in-chief of Tydskrif vir letterkunde, the oldest literary journal in South Africa (and Africa). He is a past President of the scholarly society, the International Society for Oral Literatures of Africa (ISOLA). For his contribution to the rethinking of the Afrikaans language and literature he was awarded the Insig-Kanna Award of the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in 2002 for his “innovative and enriching contribution to Afrikaans”.
