Academic Offerings

The Department of Economics offers a wide variety of courses and degrees for undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as short courses for people interested in upgrading their skills and knowledge in various aspects of economics and econometrics.

Please note:
Honours
: In 2019, the Department of Economics plans to accept no more than 60 (total) students into its BCom (Hons) Economics and BCom (Hons) Econometrics programs. Selection criteria listed in the EMS postgraduate regulations booklet apply; we have not set out additional requirements beyond what we have listed there.

M Degrees: In 2019, the Department of Economics plans to accept no more than 40 (total) students into its MCom Economics, MCom Econometrics and MPhil Economics programs. Selection criteria listed in the EMS postgraduate regulations booklet apply; we have not set out additional requirements beyond what we have listed there.

PhDs: In 2019, the Department of Economics does not plan to accept more than 10 students into its PhD Economics program. Selection criteria listed in the EMS postgraduate regulations booklet apply; we have not set out additional requirements beyond what we have listed there. If you are interested in applying for a PhD, and you meet the selection criteria, you are encouraged to look through our department's research page to see what our researchers do. If you are interested in topics like the ones listed here, you are welcome to apply.

Short Courses: In 2019, the Department of Economics plans to offer short courses in Time Series Economics (for the Practitioner and Advanced), Cross-Section Econometrics,  Econometric Analysis of Panel Data, Economic Indicators: Analysing the South African Economy, Basic Principles of Economics and Computable General Equilibrium Modelling. We are also developing potential short courses in applied econometrics methods using both STATA and R, and hope to be able to offer at least a few of them in 2018.
