The Investment and Trade Policy Centre was established in 2002 with the view to train public officials involved with Trade and Investment, whether they negotiate trade agreements with other countries, work in customs offices, or represent the country in foreign missions. Currently, research mainly revolves around intra-Africa trade, export promotion, trade facilitation and trade barriers.
The African Tax Institute (ATI) is devoted to training, research and technical assistance in the areas of tax policy and tax administration on the African continent. Its main goal is to develop capacity in ministries of finance and revenue authorities. Towards this goal, the ATI offers an interdisciplinary
master’s in taxation and a
PhD in tax policy, primarily to students from the public sector. The main research areas of ATI staff and students include tax policy, international taxation, natural resource taxation, value-added tax, fiscal decentralization and property taxation.
- Research into Health, Households and Behaviours (ReHHaB)
ReHHaB is a unit in the Department of Economics headed by Prof SF Koch. It was established in 2010 primarily focussing on PhD students under his supervision: Dambala Gelo Kutela, Abebe Damte Beyene, Chitalu Chama-Chiliba and Gauthier Tshiswaka-Kashalala. Each of those researchers focused their completed PhDs on topics related to households and household behaviour, although Dr Tshiswaka-Kashalala’s PhD and Dr Chama-Chiliba’s PhD also incorporated aspects of reproductive health. The unit is continuing to turn its focus more squarely on health and households, and is working to establish longer-term cooperation and collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, as well as public and private health sector participants. The research group with particular interest in energy and environmental economics and modelling is comprised of Prof Roula Inglesi-Lotz, Dr Heinrich Bohlmann and Prof Jan van Heerden. The RE3M group has contributed extensively to the energy and environment field not only in the academic literature but also through technical reports. Currently a number of students focus their Masters and PhD theses on energy and environmental issues seeking answers to pressing issues associated with traditional ways of consuming and generating energy, pricing and taxing energy commodities, as well as investigating new and alternative solutions for higher efficiency in the consumption of energy and renewable fuels for generating energy. One of the tools that the research group often uses is Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modelling, highly suitable for policy analysis. Along with the economic database in the model, RE3M also has an energy database to make it possible to measure the influences of external shocks on both the economy and the environment. The research group also employs a suite of econometric modelling techniques, appropriate for the research question in hand. The group is associated with the newly founded South African Association for Energy Economics (SAAEE) where Prof Inglesi-Lotz is the President and Dr Bohlmann an elected Council member.
