Welcome to the virtual home of the Department of Economics at the University of Pretoria, one of the leading academic institutions on the African continent. We are fortunate to be located in Pretoria, which is the administrative capital of South Africa and the centre of policymaking in the country as well. Pretoria is also close to Sandton, the financial capital of South Africa.

We have been able to leverage our comparative advantage in location – proximity to South African policymakers and financial institutions – to recruit excellent faculty and train the next generation of academics and policymakers. Our faculty undertakes research and provides academic leadership in monetary and fiscal policy, economic growth and development, health policy and trade policy. We are also working to build capacity in support of teaching and research objectives related to financial markets and political economy.
